The single embraces a melancholy synonymous with indie folk giants, Big Thief: it’s earthy, tender and visceral. The track carries a quiet power that channels the raw emotion and introspective beauty, replicating the spirit of Adrianne Lenker.
The Garden offers a serene yet cathartic soundscape, with lush strings and lyrics that celebrate and centralise the restorative power and tranquility of nature, the beauty of it that is perfectly encapsulated by the lyric: ‘in the wishing tree I am free.’ The iteration of a profound connection to the natural world evokes a sense of introspection in the middle of the mundanity of everyday life.
The music video is a visual journey of blending vivid images of the awakening of nature through kaleidoscopic footage of the band immersed in the beauty of the natural world, peacefully performing their craft. The video is truly a testament to the beauty found in nature and simplicity.
“Lyrically, it is about rebirth; the garden is a tender place of innocence and unconscious change,” the group explained.
“The musical idea is based on a chord progression that Rob wrote years ago and had been rearing its head on the piano at our rehearsals every so often. Theo came up with the chorus hook and from there the song developed to where it is now with some reference to a demo that Rob had made.”
“It took a little while to get the vibe right for the recording until we stumbled upon this distorted drum sound with brushes and delay which was a turning point and then the rest came easily.”
