“A beacon of light”: jasmine.4.t releases debut album ‘You Are The Morning’
Manchester singer-songwriter and trans woman jasmine.4.t is the first UK signing to the Saddest Factory Records label, and a week ago she released her debut album You Are The Morning, produced by boygenius members Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers.
Opening track Kitchen sets a beautifully sweet tone for the record, with a gentle yet insistent fingerstyle arrangement lifting endearing lyrics such as “The things that I’d do to keep you in my sight / and they'll say what they might”.
Single Skin On Skin, “a celebration of healing and physical catharsis found through unrepressed queer love”, shines with a sense of hope and growth, and before late the album falls on title track You Are The Morning. The violins that sit quietly in the background complement the soft, comfortable way Jasmine sings, whilst lyrics including “you still want me around, you make me feel okay” carry a similar admirable optimism to Kitchen, a common theme throughout the record despite the pain a lot of the songs were born from.
Best Friend’s House features vocals from friends of Jasmine’s, easily embodying the celebration of queer friendship that stands out so heavily across the album, before Guy Fawkes Tesco Dissociation brings a louder, heart-filled energy from both Jasmine and duet partner Phoebe Bridgers.
You Are The Morning closes with a simple yet soul-touching track, Woman. Beginning as a solo, Jasmine sings affirmingly of self belief - “I understand that I am in my soul, a woman” - before joined by the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles in the final lines.
You Are The Morning is a beacon of light, a beautifully candid and gracious record that celebrates queerness at its rawest. You can listen to the album here and catch her on tour here.
